How Often Should a Driveway Be Pressure Washed?
Driveways here get green faster than almost anywhere else in the UK. Mild, wet and shaded is perfect conditions for algae and moss, and a driveway that looked fine last spring can be genuinely slippery by the following autumn.
The rough schedule
For most homes, driveway cleaning every 18 months to two years keeps things looking right. North-facing or heavily shaded driveways, or ones under trees, want doing closer to annually. A sunny, open, well-drained driveway can go three years.
The honest test is not the calendar. If it has gone green, if moss is establishing in the joints, or if it is slippery underfoot after rain, it is due regardless of when it was last done.
What a proper driveway clean includes
Cleaning the surface is only part of it. On block paving, a proper job means weed and moss removal from the joints, oil stain treatment where needed, a full surface clean, then re-sanding the joints, because pressure washing removes the kiln-dried sand that holds the blocks stable. Skipping the re-sand is how driveways start moving.
Tarmac and concrete need a lighter touch and a wider fan than block paving, and imprinted concrete needs resealing afterwards. We match pressure and technique to the surface rather than running everything at maximum.
While we are there
Most people get the patio done at the same time, since the equipment and the setup are already on site and it is cheaper than two separate visits. Gutter clearing and soffit and fascia cleaning are the other two that pair naturally, and between them they change the look of the front of a house more than anything else you could spend the money on.
Render, roughcast and cladding are a different job and should not be blasted: those get soft washed instead.
